City of Vancouver
Heritage Building
Vancouver Block
Architects: Parr & Fee
This prominent office building was designed for Dominic Burns, a member of the pioneering meat packing family, in 1911-12 during the city’s pre-World War I building boom. The terra cotta cladding conceals the building’s steel structure and provides an opportunity for decorative features including the row of sculpted female caryatids beneath the cornice and clock tower. This was Vancouver’s first large clock illuminated by neon light and it continues to be a highly visible city landmark.
