ERECTED IN THE POST-REVOLUTIONARY PERIOD ON A PART OF THE LAND ONCE KNOWN AS ARCHDALE'S SQUARE, WAS OCCUPIED BY THE CHARLESTON BRANCH OF THE FIRST BANK OF THE UNITED STATES PRIOR TO 1800. ACQUIRED IN 1833 BY THE HEBREW ORPHAN SOCIETY, IT SERVED AS THE SOCIETY'S HALL, ALSO FOR A TIME AS THE MEETING PLACE OF THE R.K.BETH ELOHIM CONGREGATION AND DURING A LATER PERIOD AS THE HEBREW ORPHANAGE.
