The Egert Family Ranch Born in Germany in 1864, John Egert emigrated to the U.S. in 1880. He became a successful contractor and elevated buildings following the 1990 [sic] storm, including Trinity Church. He also served as a county commissioner. Egert died in 1939 at age 75. In 1912, he began to accumulate land and ranch this area. The name of the bayou to the east was changed from Tucker's to Egert's. A misspelling on an early map led to the current name, Eckert's. His land was sold in 1952 and conveyed to Mitchell Development in 1977. This illustration is of one of the cabins that stood on the bayou just to the north. It was used by his daughter Eva Fritiofson. Eva fought against the sale of her father's land and with others, including local attorney Bob Moore, was largely responsible for the creation of this preserve. Submitted by: Eric Goodill
