This plaque explains about the two signs along the canal, approach the bridge. The first sign is "Strijk zeilwerk", which translates into "lower the sails and mast", the second one is "Stop in 100 meters". These signs were for the freight ships sailing thru this canal until the 1940's. The use of warnings and signs became obligatory by royal proclamation of August 13, 1891. This proclamation states that ships must warned for bridges and docks by the bridge attendant. Either by steam whistle, ring a bell, or yelling at ship's crew. The signs that are reinstalled here were originally placed around 1920. Submitted by Danny Kalkhoven
