SACAJAWEA WELL WAS DRILLED IN 1918 BY C.F. CROSS. THE LAND BELONGED
TO W.B. GARRE.T. THEY WERE DRILLING FOR OIL, BUT STRUCK HOT MINERAL
WATER. THE WELL FLOWS 1,370,000 GALLONS PER 24 HOURS AT 130°.
MINERAL CONTENT PER MILLION PARTS: CALCIUM 396, MAGNESIUM 76.
SODIUM 227, POTASSIUM 46, CARBONATE 10, BICARBONATE 741, SULFATE
819, CHLORIDE 300.
THE WELL WAS NAMED FOR SACAJAWEA, THE SHOSHONE INDIAN WOMAN
WHO GUIDED LEWIS AND CLARK ON THEIR EXPEDITION INTO THE NORTHWEST.
SACAJAWEA MEANS "BOAT PUSHER."
THE LAND AREA ORIGINALLY WAS A PART OF THE SHOSHONE INDIAN RESERVATION.
IN 1896 THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT PURCHASED AN AREA TEN MILES
SQUARE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE RESERVATION FOR $60,000.
