A swimming pool built by the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor for residents of Waimano Home, a Territory of Hawaii institution for people with developmental disabilities. The pool was intended to provide for recreation and therapeutic treatment of those suffering from muscular deformities and disorders. When it was completed in 1958, it was dedicated to the memory of David Moncrief, Jr. - an important member of the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor.
Today, the pool sits abandoned on the former site of Waimano Home, which is now home to the offices of a variety of State of Hawaii government offices (primarily branches of the Departments of Health and Land & Natural Resources). The grounds are gated and can be accessed only through the security gate at the end of Waimano Home Road.
I work for the Department of Health and found the plaque by accident one day when I was exploring the grounds around our new office space and saw something on a rock down a small weed covered lane. Weedy and filled with green murky water, I just had to learn more about the site. When I googled David Moncrief's name, I found the interesting back story via Pearl Harbor Rotary website.
