It appears this was formerly on a plane at the enterance to the airport, it is now in a corner of the departure lounge

Plaque reads:

'Douglas DC-3 - The Gooney Bird

At 3PM on December 17th, 1935 The first of 10,629 DC-3s took to the air.

Few people could have imagined that, 50 years later, several hundred of these aircraft would still be operating in airline services around the world.

So successful was the Dc-3 that almost every airline at some time has operated this grand old lady.

Air services to Cairns and throughout North Queensland were pioneered with the DC-3 and this aircraft stands as a tribute to the technology of the thirties and in remembrance to the military and civilian crews who idolised her.

She is truly a legend in her own lifetime. This plaque was provided by The McDonnell Douglas Corporation Cairns 12 March 1984
