Fishermen from Essex and
Ipswich began fishing from
this site in the mid-1600's.
They soaked their catch in
brine and sun dried it for
shipment to the Caribbean,
England and other faraway
destinations. In the early
1800's, the Massachusetts
Humane Society established
a life-saving station on the
west side of the cove which
was later operated by the US
Coast Guard and is now
privately owned.
