In 1876, Père Menard constructed a small building on donated land called "École St. Jean" (St. John School). which served as a school administered by the Sisters of Mt. Carmel and as a chapel for Mass. On June 14, 1919. the church parish was formally established. In 1922, the congregation built a bridge to accommodate parishioners on the east side of the bayou. In 1930, the present church was constructed featuring a vaulted, stained-wood ceiling. In 1940, the school was closed. In July 1955, the church was enlarged to accommodate a growing congregation by splitting the building in the middle, moving the sanctuary, and adding a new section to allow for more seating.
