The wet winter of 2013/14 with its frequent tidal surges and high river flows caused the Thames Barrier to be shut several times. This is one such occasion, on the early February spring tide, almost 61 years to the day since the floods of 31 January 1953 that gave rise to the idea of the Barrier, as noted on this plaque.
