Shackleford is a ceremonial site with 4 mounds that date to about AD 800. Three of the mounds are 3 feet tall or less. However, the large platform mount is over 13 feet tall and is the best-preserved part of the site. It was constructed in several episodes on top of a prepared surface of sand.
