Scalloway is closely associated with the 'Shetland Bus', a World War II operation which maintained supplies to the Norwegian resistance. In 1942 and 1943 this was done with a fleet of fishing boats based at this quay, although later in the war faster and better armed American sub-chasers were used. As the plaque indicates, the slipway was visited by Crown Prince Olav, from whom it takes its name, in October 1942.
