Plaque, The Anchor bar

A piece of history, but quite sad - the inscription reads, "The Anchor Bar. This building was once The Anchor Bar. It was owned in 1943 by Hugh O'Neill and was renowned for its late night singsong's around the piano. The bar was very popular with American Soldiers stationed in Keady prior to the Normandy Landings of 1944. When the Americans were leaving, the gates of Keady Railway Station had to be locked because a great crowd had gathered to say goodbye. The Keady "Yanks" never reached France as their landing craft was hit by a Stuka Dive Bomber on D-Day and sank. This plaque is dedicated to their memory and happier days in the Anchor Bar."
