The following text is included in the description: "During the nineteenthth and early twentieth century, Irish emigrant farewell gatherings became known as American Wakes. They were likened to the Irish tradition of funeral wakes where friends and family gathered to commemorate the loss of a loved one while also celebrating their achievements in life. For those emigrating from Ireland, the friends and family who gathered to say goodbye went through and experienced all the same sentiment, sadness at impending separation but joy at the prospect of a new and better life. Such American Wakes would have taken place on countless occasions in this hotel including the period during which the Titanic called to Cobh to pick up its 123 passengers of whom only 44 survived the journey."
