PARK SLOPE HISTORIC DISTRICT
PROSPECT PARK, LARGELY COMPLETED BY 1873 AS THE MASTERPIECE OF FREDERICK LAW OLMSTED AND CALVERT VAUX'S LANDSCAPE DESIGNS, DEFINED PARK SLOPE AS A DESIRABLE RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD. PRINCIPALLY BUILT BETWEEN THE MID-1880'S AND WORLD WAR I, PARK SLOPE RETAINS ITS 19TH CENTURY PROFILE OF THREE- AND FOUR-STORY BUILDINGS, PUNCTUATED BY CHURCH STEEPLES, RECALLING BROOKLYN'S CHARACTER AS THE CITY OF HOMES AND CHURCHES. THE MONTAUK CLUB, A VENETIAN GOTHIC PALAZZO BUILT IN 1891, AND MONTGOMERY PLACE, A BLOCK-LONG STREET, MUCH OF WHICH WAS DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT CASS GILBERT, ARE THE MOST DRAMATIC OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD'S ARCHITECTURAL CREATIONS. VICTORIAN GOTHIC, QUEEN ANNE, ROMANESQUE REVIVAL, AND OTHER STYLES ABOUND HERE.
