Lawren Stewart Harris
1885 – 1970
Born in Brantford, Ontario, Harris is recognized as one of Canada’s finest and most versatile artists. Over a period of sixty years he painted quiet street scenes and houses, portraits, landscapes and abstractions. He is remembered for dramatic representations of the rugged beauty of Lake Superior, the Rockies and the Arctic. From the mid-1930s onward his search for a spiritual truth directed his art to an abstract expression. A poet, writer, and art theorist, as well as a painter, Harris was a strong advocate of a unique Canadian art and played a major role in the establishment of the Group of Seven.
