Outside the visitor center in the sleep town of Belle Fourche, SD (at the corner of Canam Hwy and Faulk St) lies a plaque and an associate monument, it reads:

“Welcome to Belle Fourche. The geo center of the US.

In 1959 following the admission of Alaska and Hawaii to the Union, the US Coast and Geodetic survey officially designated a point 20 miles north of Belle Fourche, South Dakota as the Geographic Center of the Nation.

Entry of Alaska and Hawaii as states moved the site from its old location in Smith Center Kansas to Butte County, South Dakota.

The US Coast and Geodetic survey announced that the location of the new center is at Latitude 44 degrees, 58 minutes North and Longitude 103 degrees, 46 minutes West.”

Below the main plaque is an endearingly honest additional note: “Because of the remote location of the marker, a more accessible monument for tourists to enjoy has been placed here behind our visitor’s center.” Although, if someone has made it as far as Belle Fourche, SD, they can probably make it the last 20 miles :)
