The South Croydon Convalescent Home for Children was founded in 1880 by Mrs Harriet Sturt, at an address in Chelsham Road: it moved to these premises in 1890, the building being opened by Lady Beatrix Herbert. Aftercare following an illness or operation was not a service offered by the hospitals of the time and this home provided it for a small subscription. Its original clientele was middle-class but organisations such as the Waifs and Strays (now the Children's Society) might also send a poorer child there to recover. See Link. The building as a whole can be seen at TQ3262 : Former South Croydon Convalescent Home for Children, now South Croydon Business Centre.
