“The first all steel and concrete ballpark in the nation, Forbes Field was the home to the Pirates, site of four World Series in 1909, 1925, 1927 & 1960 and two All-Star games. Hosted the Homestead Grays, Steelers, and Pitt Panthers, as well as political rallies and boxing matches. Site of Bill Mazeroski’s game seven, ninth inning, World Series winning home run on October 13, 1960 and Babe Ruth’s last 3 home runs. Damaged by fire; razed 1972.”

The site is now occupied mostly by buildings of the University of Pittsburgh. A portion of the outfield wall and flagpole still stands. Mazeroski’s home run is considered by many to be the most famous home run in baseball history. At 1:05 PM on October 13, 1985, exactly 25 years later to the minute, Pittsburgh resident Saul Finkelstein sat alone at the base of the flagpole and began listening to a recording of the NBC radio broadcast of the game. Finkelstein continued the tradition for eight more years until word spread and others started attending. In 2010, on the 50th anniversary of the game, over 1,000 people, including Bill Mazeroski, attended the broadcast.
