The fourteenth in a series of fifteen plaques unveiled to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012, following the history of Bournemouth through the ages using monarchs' reigns and jubilees as the steps in time. This fourteenth one relates to the reign of Elizabeth II, between her silver and golden jubilees (i.e. 1977-2002). Major developments are the Bournemouth International Centre (opened 1985) and Royal Bournemouth Hospital (early 1990s). The Polytechnic is granted University status. The town's infamous Waterfront building starts to go up (see SZ0890 : Bournemouth: the Waterfront building) but will not last long! And The Square is pedestrianized in 1992. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaques for the introductory plaque, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: five of the Diamond Jubilee Plaques for an overall view of five of the plaques, providing some context. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (13) for the previous plaque in the series, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (15) for the next one.
