The first in a series of fifteen plaques unveiled to mark the Queen's diamond jubilee in 2012, following the history of Bournemouth through the ages using monarchs' reigns and jubilees as the steps in time. This first one relates to the time prior to George III (i.e. 1760 and earlier). The main points of reference are Hengistbury Head (in SZ1790), Henry VIII hunting on his grandmother's Stourfield Chase estate (roughly SZ1392), and the trees of Holdenhurst Wood (roughly SZ1294) being felled for use as beacons to warn Elizabeth I of the approach of the Spanish Armada. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaques for the introductory plaque, and SZ0890 : Bournemouth: five of the Diamond Jubilee Plaques for an overall view of five of the plaques, providing some context. See SZ0890 : Bournemouth: Diamond Jubilee Plaque (2) for the next in the series.
