Battle of Brooklyn
In the summer of 1776, an invasion force of 32,000 troops aboard a British naval fleet of 400 ships was anchored off Staten Island, poised for an attack on New York City. On August 22 British commander General Howe launched an invasion with 15,000 troops, crossing three miles of water to land unopposed on the beaches of Gravesend, just north of this point. The Battle of Brooklyn had begun, forcing the retreat of General George Washington and the Continental Army from Brooklyn Heights, across the East River, into Manhattan.
