Of the 46,766 Corvettes produced in 1978, 15,283 were Silver Anniversary editions. The year 1978 marked the first year Corvette would pace the Indy 500 race. The original pace car paint scheme evolved into a "Silver Anniversary" paint option that consisted of a two-toned Silver scheme divided by silver striping. Chevrolet marked Corvette's 25th year by introducing the most extensively redesigned model since the 1968. Its new "fast back" rear end styling featured a large rear window but not a hatchback. This design change created significantly more luggage space behind the seats. A retracting cover was also added for security and sun protection. 25th Anniversary Emblems also appeared on all 1978 models.
