Wilmot Park

 

These fields, then part of the Odell estate, were set aside as a public park on 18 June 1860 and officially opened by his Royal Highness Prince Albert Edward, The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII), on 6 August 1860.

In 1894 Edward H Wilmot purchased the park from its owners carried out extensive improvements and in 1895 presented it to the city "To be held ... in trust, for the use and enjoyment of the citizens, to be called and know as Wilmot Park" with an endowment for its upkeep.

Wilmot's generosity also secured the site of the Lady Beaverbrook Rink, College Field and Queen's Square for recreational use by the university and the city. Edward Wilmot's playing field benefactions were appreciated by the residents of Fredericton in his day and continue to serve his original intentions.

Erected 1984 by the city of Fredericton as a contribution to the New Brunswick Bicentennial

This memorial was unveiled on 25 September 1984 by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
