Life Began Along Bayou Teche Shadows-on-the-Teche is a historic house museum property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A white-columned brick building constructed between 1831 and 1834, The Shadows is both a survivor and a reminder of another time. But as the home of a sugar planter, The Shadows has been carefully preserved and restored and stands today as a picture of life from the past. A stroll through the famed gardens mingles the wafting scents of sweet olive trees, the expansive azalea blossoms, ginger lilies and magnolias, along with the vivid summer crepe myrtles. Though occupying only two-and-a-half acres of the original 158-acre property, the remaining gardens and house still provide a mystique and allure for visitors.
