Scenic Railway

Wikipedia: 'the steepest cable-driven funicular railway in the world, the steepest incline of 52 degrees contained within a total incline distance of 310 metres (1,020 ft)

Plaque reads: ' Scenic Railway

There are nearly 100 kilometeres of tunnels in the cliffs at the level where you are standing.

Coal mining began in this area in 1878. There were about 40 mines at various times. The railway you see above you was used to haul the coal up the cliff and it was then transported to Katoomba.

The last mine closed in the late 1930's. Today the railway transports passengers instead of coal.'
