Merchant Hotel
The Merchant Hotel was
a miniature Japantown,
brimming with children, a
dentist, a doctor, and the Teikoku
Mercantile Company, run since 1905
by the Matsushima family. After Pearl
Harbor in 1941, Japanese families like the
Matshushimas had only weeks to sell out
before being sent to internment
camps as "enemy aliens."
Many lost everything.
