KRÝSIVÍK - SELTÚN

Historical Notes

At Seltún there is a high-temperature geothermal area with mud pots and steam vents. At a depth of 1000 m, the temperature is above 200C. Seltún belongs to one of the four volcanic systems that lie along the eruptive fault on Reykjanes peninsula. The stem vents are surrounded by considerable sulphur deposits, which in earlier times were exploited for the production of gunpowder.

Caution: Temperatures of 80-100C! Please walk only on the paths and marked trails and respect the environment.
