Jolliffe Island

YELLOWKNIFE HERITAGE 1994
JOLLIFFE ISLAND

The City of
Yellowknife is not
confined to the
mainland alone.
In the 1940s, as
much activity
occurred on
nearby islands as
onshore. A two
minute canoe ride would take you
across the narrow channel to
Jolliffe Island, formerly occupied
by houses, a general store, a lumber
yard and the Imperial Oil tank
farm which stored
Yellowknife's
supply of heating
oil and gas.
The island is
named for Dr. A. W.
(Fred) Jolliffe, a
geologist who
worked for the
Geological Survey of Canada from
1928 to 1945. In 1955 he mapped
gold deposits in the Yellowknife
area which later led to the
development of the 'Con' mine.
