UPTOWN: MINNEAPOLIS' LAKES DISTRICT
The James J. Ballentine Veterans of Foreign Wars
Post 246 was founded in October 1919, in the aftermath of World War I.
It was established with 50 charter members in memory of James J.
Ballentine, a popular local boy. Born in Minneapolis in 1893, Ballentine
attended South High School, where he served as Senior Class President
of 1912 and captain of the track team. He continued his sports prowess
in college, where he played on the University of Minnesota's 1916
championship football team. Ballentine entered the armed services in
May 1917, and was fatally wounded in the final month of World War I.
The Ballentine VFW Post met in several locations around Lyndal
and Lake until enough funds were raised to construct a building at this
location in 1954.
