In the 19th and early 20th century rivers were the main transport route. Ships were  towed by means of a rope, pulled by horses on the road parallel to the stream. In Dutch this road was called "jaagpad" In the bend of the river a pole was erected to guide the rope around it, in Dutch a "jaagpaal". The plaque explains this near a restored jaagpaal in a bend of the river Vecht.
