Hudson’s Bay Company
Architects: Burke, Horwood & White
This magnificent department store, built between 1913 and 1950, established this part of downtown as a prime retail area. Although the store was built in four sections, a respect for the original design makes it appear as one. Architecturally this building inspired other Company stores in Victoria, Calgary, and Winnipeg. The Hudson’s Bay Company, chartered in 1670, operated fur trading posts and promoted real estate development in western and northern Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries.
