Fort Independence
Dating from 1634, called Castle William in honor of King William III of England, prior to the Revolutionary War. Used as a garrison for British troops until 1776. Rededicated by President John Adams in 1799 as "Fort Independence." The first home of the Boston Marine (now U.S. Public Health Service) Hospital, (1799 - 1804) the fourth oldest hospital in the country which was established through the efforts of the Boston Marine Society, founded in 1742.
