This plaque greets people entering Hallgrimskirkja, the large church that overlooks Reykjavik. The same saying appears over the doors of many churches throughout Iceland. It reads:
Þá Þú gengur í guðshús inn
gæt þess vel, sál mín fróma,
hæð þú þar ekki herrann þinn
með hegðun líkamans tóma
beygðu holdsins og hjartans kné
heit bæn þin ástarkveðja sé
hræsnin mun síst þér sóma
Come in to God's house
keep well in mind my pious soul
do not mock your Lord.
With a pure body,
bend your knee, flesh and heart
your promise and prayers be filled with love
You will have no honor in deceit.
