Zuster Bertken
This stone in the street commemorates that at this location a woman called "zuster Bertken" was (at her own will) walled in a small compartment in the wall of the "Buurkerk" church in AD 1457. She stayed there in volunteery solitary confinement until her death in AD1514, as a penance for her sins. She thought herself sinful because she was the illegitimate daughter of Jacob van Lichtenberg, provost of the chapter of the Pieterskerk in Utrecht.. Later the church was partially broken up to make way for a shopping street. Submitted by Danny Kalkhoven.
