Sir Martin Frobisher was born in Altofts around 1535 and eventually became a privateer, like another famous Elizabethan seaman, Sir Francis Drake, with whom he accompanied on a voyage to the West Indies. On board the 1,100 ton 'Triumph' he played a role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 for which he was knighted. He was eventually mortally wounded whilst attempting to lift the siege of Fort Crozon near Brest, dying in Plymouth in November 1594. See SE3320 : Wakefields walk of fame, Westmorland Street (2)
