The Class of 1897 Gateway

The Class of 1897 Gateway

Beginning in the early 1890s, the taller pillars you see before you marked the one-lane gateway to the campus from State Street. Purdue's class of 1897 paid to enlarge the gateway by moving the taller pillars, adding the low walls and shorter pillars. The structure was removed in the 1950s. In 1991, children and grandchildren of the Class of 1897 and members of the Class of 1936 raised funds to have the structure refurbished and placed here to honor the rich history of Purdue.
