Stephen Stephensson

The monument was erected in north Iceland to honor Icelandic poet Stephen Stephensson. He was born in Skagafjörður, Iceland but emigrated to Wisconsin, USA in 1873. This monument was erected in 1953. The monument overlooks the stunning Skagafjöður valley. The plaque reads, as far as I can translate:

Komstu skáld í skagafjörð
þegar lyng er leyst úr klaka laut
og yfir tunum vaka
Börnin við glöð groður vorð.

Come, poet to Skagafjord
when the heather, bent over, is freed from ice
and the headlands wake
Children with growing happiness
