St. Julien Square
St. Julien is a small town in Belgium where the 7th Infantry Battalion (1st British Columbia Regiment), 1st Infantry Division, Canadian Expeditionary Force, fought in the 2nd battle of Ypres, the first gas attacks, April and May 1915 during World War I. The battalion’s machine gun officer, Lieutenant Edward Donald Bellew, was awarded the Victoria Cross on 24 April 1915 for conspicuous gallantry while holding off a massive enemy attack on the Ypres Salient.
This pedestrian mews is named “St. Julien Square” to honour the past, present and future sacrifices of the men and women of the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught’s Own).
