The Statue of Silent Sam on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A controversial memorial to those from UNC who went to fight in the Civil War against the Union. Erected in 1913. Approximately as many from UNC went to fight for the Union, but that is not mentioned here. Erected by UNC and the United Daughters of the Confederacy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Daughters_of_the_Confederacy).
As of Sept 2017, many students continually protest its presence on campus and numerous departments and schools on campus are formally requesting its removal.
