SAWTOWN 1906-1934
THIS ABANDONED SAWMILL IS ALL
THAT REMAINS OF A LOGGING COMMU-
NITY THAT ONCE INCLUDED MORE
THAN 600 PEOPLE. SAWTOWN'S MILL
PROCESSED ALL THE CYPRESS LUMBER
CUT WITHIN 50 SQUARE MILES. THE
WATER-RESISTANT WOOD WAS MADE
INTO FENCE POSTS. DOCKS. ROOF
SHINGLES. BARRELS. SIDING, AND COF-
FINS. IT TOOK LESS THAN 30 YEARS
TO CUT DOWN ALL THE BIG CYPRESS
TREES, SOME OF THEM MORE THAN
1.000 YEARS OLD. WHEN THE TREES
WERE GONE, BUSINESSES CLOSED
DOWN, AND SAWTOWN WAS DESERTED.
