CITY OF VANCOUVER
HERITAGE BUILDING
Ranier Hotel
Architect: Emil Guenther
This hotel was built in 1907, and replaced the earlier Balmoral Hotel also owned by William and John Quann. Its style reflected the change from the earlier more ornate Victorian to the more refined Edwardian era. Its location directly south of the Union Steamship Company docks at the foot of Carrall Street, which transported men to work camps along the coast, made it well placed to accommodate those working in lumber camps. In 2009 the rehabilitation of the two street facades was completed which included installation of a neon sign similar to the one that was on this building in the 1930s.
