This Arnhem born became famous world wide for his revelations in the field of physics. In 1902 he and his assistent Pieter Zeeman received the Nobel-price for their research on the influence of magnetism on light. Therewith Lorentz laid the ground work for the discovery of the first elementary particle: the electron. The knowledge Lorentz developed is among other things used in the development of the GPS system.
