Plaque is dedicated to a landmark natural feature which crumbled in 2003. At the Profiler Plaza onlookers can align metal facsimiles with the mountain view to simulate the Old Man’s appearance. Plaque reads: The Old Man of the Mountain Profiler Plaza Down this path lies the Old Man of the Mountain Profiler Plaza. Opened in 2011 and created through the generosity of hundreds of friends of the Old Man and Franconia Notch. The Plaza is a tribute to the profile that for generations looked over Franconia Notch, and the citizens of the Granite State. From its discovery in 1805 through 2003, when the Conway Granite of the profile finally submitted to nature and crumbled, the Old Man was a beloved icon of New Hampshire. It remains a cherished symbol of the state and its people. For nearly 9 decades, beginning in 1916, dozens of men and women dedicated their time and toil to the maintenance and preservation of this natural phenomena. Using novel technology, pure determined grit, and their love of this place, these men and women worked to anchor the Old Man to the side of Cannon Mountain. It is to them, and to all who love the Old Man and the wild beauty of Franconia Notch, that the Profiler Plaza is dedicated. The Old Man of the Mountain Profiler Plaza was gifted to the state of New Hampshire in 2014 by the Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund.
