Whiteabbey Hospital

This building formed the main block of the original hospital known as “The Abbey” built on this site in 1906 and opened as an Auxiliary Workhouse for the treatment of tuberculosis by the Belfast Board of Guardians in the year 1907.

On the 1st of October 1914 the premises were acquired by the Belfast Corporation, renamed “The Belfast Municipal Sanatorium”, and used for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.

The hospital was vested in the Northern Ireland Tuberculosis Authority under the Public Health (Tuberculosis) Act (Northern Ireland) 1946 and was renamed Whiteabbey Hospital. Under this authority its functions were widened in scope and treatment was provided for other respiratory diseases as well as for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Under the Health Services Act (Northern Ireland) 1958 the functions of the Tuberculosis Authority were transferred to the Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority. This Authority appointed the Newtownabbey Hospital Management Committee to manage and control Whiteabbey Hospital with effect from the 1st April 1959.

The Hospitals Authority, in consultation with the Newtownabbey Hospital Management Committee, undertook the planning of a development scheme to provide a general hospital and the reconstruction of this building to provide general medical and surgical services was the first phase of the development scheme. The work of reconstruction was completed in the year 1963 and the building was re-opened as a general medical and surgical unit on the 5th of June, 1964.”
