Arriving in British Columbia from the United States in 1859, Scottish-born Capt. William Irving pioneered the riverboat trade of the lower Fraser River. In 1862-64, Royal Engineers built his fine home of California redwood in the Popular San Francisco Goth Revival style. It stands almost unchanged, an expression of the prosperity and tastes of the 19th century commercial classes.
