IN MEMORY OF JAMES VAN DE LUYSTER
AND THE EARLY SETTLERS OF
LEELAND, VRIESLAND AND DRENTHE
"Het Waterhuisje"
These sturdy, God-fearing pioneers
came from the Netherlands and in June
1847 landed from a flat boat at the
then head of navigation of black river
at a point 71 rods south and 16 rods east
from this marker.
A log house with bark roof known as
"Hets Waterhuisje" built in the forest on
the south bank of the river was their
temporary home.
This served also for colonists arriving
later and as a station for distribution
of building material, tools and supplies
shipped by raft or scow from Singapore
on the Kalamazoo River.
