Grand Hotel / Terminus Hotel

CITY OF VANCOUVER

HERITAGE BUILDING

The Grand Hotel was built in 1889. It was known as the Granville Hotel until its expansion in 1904. Designed by Noble Stonestreet Hoffar, one of Vancouver’s earliest architects, it is a fine example of the Victorian Italianate style, and one of Gastown’s oldest hotels. It served the seasonal workers in fishing and logging who returned to the city for short periods.

The Terminus Hotel, designed by architect Emil Guenther, also provided short-term accommodation. Built in 1901, featuring its distinctive bay windows, it is the third building here of that name reflecting Vancouver as the western end of the CPR. The first was a small wooden saloon destroyed in the 1886 fire followed by a brick building. Much of the hotel was destroyed by fire in 2000; the façade was retained until it was rehabilitated with the Grand Hotel as a single project in 2008.
