Ginger Goodwin was a Cumberland coal miner and union organizer whose death in 1918 led to British Columbia's first general strike.Starting in 1958, Stop of Interest signs were erected across British Columbia to commemorate significant historic people, places, and events. In 1996, the NDP government named a section of highway on Vancouver Island ""Ginger Goodwin Way,"" and in 2001 the new Liberal government tore the signs down. In the same vein, the Heritage BC Stop came in two versions; first titled "Ginger Goodwin Way, and later simply "Ginger Goodwin". The sign was originally located at a rest stop on the highway. The Liberal government moved the sign to a less conspicuous location at the Cumberland Cemetery.
