Signer of the Declaration of Independence Lewis, a merchant, came to New York in 1735. In retirement, he became involved in political life. He was a founding member of the Sons of Liberty, a delegate to the Second Continental Congress, and a Trinity Church Vestry member. He is the only signer of the Declaration of Independence buried in Manhattan.
